Poor fuel economy. The engine is not getting a clean charge of air, so combustion is less efficient. The ECU compensates by injecting more fuel, but the result is incomplete combustion and wasted diesel.
Carbon buildup in the intake. The recirculated exhaust gas coats the inside of the intake manifold with a thick layer of oily carbon soot. Over time this restricts airflow significantly.
